How Arceus Has Fallen

Arceus, considered the God of all Pokemon, has taken the backseat in the Sword and Shield series to its violent counterpart, Giratina.

Let’s start with the Arceus V alternate art, featured in Brilliant Stars.

166/172 Illus. kawayoo

Stunning art to compliment the creator of all Pokemon. But what’s the average price of this card today? According to Ebay recent sales; it is going between $50-$80AUD.

But is it going up in price?

Unfortunately for our all-creator, the prices are only going lower.

Now, over to Giratina.

186/196 Illus. Shinji Kanda

First impressions of the card look cluttered and confusing, but leave a lasting impression due to its surreal, compelling and beautifully illustrated background (which appears to be the distortion world). These notes heavily compliment the destructive nature of Giratina.

The value of this card today? AUD$400-$500. That’s a huge margin over Arceus.

And it’s only going higher.

So, why the major difference? I suppose Giratina’s art is way more appealing than Arceus’. But there might be something to do with the pull rates.

Looking at Brilliant Stars:

Arceus has a 1 in 568 pull rate according to data from opening over 10,000 packs. That’s 1 in 16 (15.7 to be exact) booster boxes.

Lost Origin, on the other hand, has much lower pull rates.

In opening over 8,000 packs, Giratina was only pulled from 1 out of 720 packs. That’s an extra 5 (4.2 to be exact) booster boxes over Arceus, a total of 1 in 20 booster boxes.

While this experiment was 2,000 packs less than the Brilliant stars opening, the data would still probably be the same.

What’s that word that drives up prices? Scarcity.

And the other one? Demand.

We all know what it does. We know what happened to the First Edition Charizards. Scarcity + Demand = High prices.

The combination of low pull rates, and desired artwork have given Giratina the rising high ground over Arceus.

That’s a wrap!

I hope you enjoyed the fifth edition.
